Mine Machinery: Komatsu 930E-5

The Mine Machinery series of stories takes a closer look at pieces of equipment that keep the coal train full and power stations firing out of our Callide Mine. Here we look at an absolute workhorse on site, the Komatsu 930E-5 diesel-electric dump truck.

The 930 dump truck has long been a market leader in the ‘ultra’ class, above 290 tonnes, boasting serious payload, safety and efficiency credentials that have made it a staple at Callide Mine.

The new 930E-5 model takes efficiency to another level, with a diesel-electric drive that offers fuel use savings, reduced particulate matter emissions, and reduced noise pollution.

Komatsu 930E-5 dump trucks can haul up to 304 tonnes depending on model specification and are powered by a 2014kW/2700hp diesel engine with accompanying electric drive. Across the fleet of 18 Komatsu 930E series 4 and 5 trucks, we work to achieve around a five percent reduction in fuel use compared with previous models while also improving productivity.

A major benefit at Callide Mine is the low maintenance intensity of the 930E-5 trucks, which means less time working on them – bringing down the cost-per-tonne. In fact, when it does come time to service them, they spend just 12 hours in the service bay before being put back to work.

The new generation operator cabin features high levels of operational comfort and safety, equipped with the Komtrax Plus 2 remote monitoring and machine guidance systems as standard.

Among production crews on-site, the Komatsu 930E-5 is considered a comfortable, safe and technologically advanced truck to operate. It’s the Rolls Royce of dump trucks, in our opinion!
